According to USA Today, hotels are moving away from traditional social media such as Facebook and Twitter and turning to visual platforms such as Instagram and Pinterest.
Starwood Hotels and Resorts will begin integrating Instagram photos and videos that are geo-tagged with their websites across all Starwood brands. This is an extension of their current endeavour, allowing guests to post unedited reviews on their websites.
Four Seasons have also jumped on the visual social media bandwagon, utilizing Pinterest's Place Pins feature into its go program. The purpose is to capitalize on how consumers are sharing their experiences through photos.
Other major hotel chains joining the movement include Marriott with their recent #travelbrilliantly promotion and InterContinental Hotels Group #DiscoverIHG campaign. Starwood hotels are tagged in more than 40,000 Instagrams a month, proving that their customer base are active users of the platform.
